If you all haven't been following Nintendo and it's new home video game console, the Wii, it has become a household phenomenon.
Just today, at an annual video game conference, the company announced it's new game to get casual people into the market of video games.
The game comes with a balance pad that interacts with your television where you can do various exercises such as pushups, dancing, and yoga, the trainer on the telly will tell you if you're doing things right. About 40 different games to play that encourage good health will be included.
It also calculates BMI, weight loss, dieting info, and more!
Onscreen trainers, stretching routines, minigames, all on a pad. This game is going to be a big hit and will reach out to many people in need of some fun with their exercise routine. They've learned from Wii Sports that people love exercising while playing video games. Trust me, if you haven't heard about this already, you will be on CNN, MSNBC, NEWSWEEK, etc. very very soon.
Look for info very shortly on the news stations. Within the next day or two.
Here is a link to an article on the announcement from a very popular video game website:

I'll look forward to the reviews on this one.. I just got my hands on a Wii last week, and I can tell it certainly will help me do more than just sit on the sofa playing video games! I have to admit I was sore after my first night of playing the normal games from all the unaccustomed movement!
Thanks for posting the link :-)

Nintendo is looking to make a lot of money!!!! I imagine that both goals will be accomplished to some degree LOL. Seriously, no offense intended Weetza. I suspect that quite a few people here aren't much into gaming. I have been checking out the Wii and though my kids don't know it that is likely what they are getting for Christmas. Just from watching kids play at our friends houses I know it gets them off the couch. I had not heard of the balance pad, sounds interesting...I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks for the heads up.

I bet it's easier (and cheaper) to get into shape without the Wii. (Though I bet Nintendo will stick pins in my effigy for thinking so).
I'm always amazed at how clever folk think up a great way to have you pay for helping you do simple things. Those abs rollers spring to mind.
I guess if it results in people exercising when they wouldn't otherwise, then it's 'a good thing'. I wonder if any of Nintendo's 'fat cats' use it. Probably, they just exercise by lifting their wallets...

It is at least true about DDR - I don't have a game console but I did had a go at someone's house once, and if I ever visit such a situation again I'll take advantage of the facility. (I'll be too tight to play that game at an arcade, and possibly also too self-concious. I'll leave that to teenage girls.)
I've seen the Wii in action. Not the exercise bit but some games like golf. Whichever way you look at it, the players must at least stand up and move their bodies a little, which is more than they would typically be doing!

I know this is an old thread, but it made me grin.
My little brother got a Wii for Christmas, and inevitably I got involved. It was actually really fun and every day we'd be trying to beat our previous "wiifit age". But oh my god did my arms hurt from the baseball. That one was really hard work. Really good fun and everyone had a go.
Not so sure about the balance pad so much... haven't seen one in action, only seen the advert-type things on the Nintendo site. I imagine I'd be surprised by it, as I was with the Wii mini-games in general.
Nothing you can buy really is purely with the motive of promoting good health and fitness. In the end, companies produce products to make a profit.

My brother might be getting a wii soon cause his bday is in like 4 days..
If he gets one, I'm gonna get DDR, cause it's fun and makes me sweat!
I don't think it gives you that much exercise, but it's definately better than doing nothing!

Okay - you've made me ask...
What's a DDR thingie?
Last time I looked it was the German abbreviation for the old East Germany before reunification - (Deutsche Demokratische Republik).
I'm betting it's nothing to do with that.
See, I told you I don't get out much!

Dance Dance Revolution...
It's basically a floor matt and you step on the squares according to what it tells you to do [or at least you try!]. It's like a giant controller where the squares are the buttons that input to the game.
Quite fun when I've tried it. I wasn't aware there was a version of it for the Wii, DDR is a Playstation thing.

So there are these arrows that move along the screen, and you have to step on those arrows (on the mats) when the reach the top of the screen. There are different modes too, and can get VERY hard!! My friend has one, and she has two mats so we can play against eachother.

I love DDR...but man, you have to have some rhythm, and apparently I don't.
Nevd, you have to step on the arrows as the scroll up your TV screen, and it all corresponds to the song that you chose. and of course there is an avatar person, and lots of cool lights and color and stuff.
I think it's pretty good exercise...at least it made me tired!! :P

There are some new reviews out about the wii Fit and I don't think I'll buy it now. Maybe way a year or two to see what other games they come out with that promot fitness.
But that DDR! omg, I have one, and I love it. I've lost 10 lbs since I bought it back in mid-Feb!
But yeah, at first I was excited about the Wii Fit, but now, eh. They say it's really not fun if there's more than one person going to play because you have to go to the main menu to choose a different player. I guess if it's just you and someone else, I guess it would be good.
Stay Fit!

I agree with what Nir said - it's still more exercise than what someone would typically get playing video games.
I have always been a video game junkie, leading to a sedentary lifestyle which is greatly responsible for why I gained so much weight. This brings fitness to a whole new audience that might not be interested otherwise. I agree that it is probably not optimal, but it's definitely something!
I do have a Wii, and have thought about picking this up, but I dunno. I might just pick it up eventually to support their decision. Whether it's to make money or not (which it is, of course), it's still a fabulous idea.

Having seen all the articles (and in person) the many overweight children and adults, if they at least are moving and lowering their blood pressure and losing 10 pounds, it would be well worth it. It also can make a great family fun time. Just don't get Great Granny to do the ski thing....ours fell over...but she was unhurt and laughing the whole time!

I'll probably be buying one of these at some point soon. I'll let you all know what my family and I think of it, when and if said purchasing comes to pass.

Okay, we now have been playing the addtion of Wii Fitness with our Wii we got last Christmas and that is so fun....we are literally spending hours over the course of day playing the games and the Wii Fit.....and we arent' seeming to get tired of it...though we have never gotten tired of our other Wii games. It is wonderful as it incorporating the whole family (even the darn dog tries to horn in on the action) and any freind that happens by.
I have actually lost 2.4 pounds so far with it on top of my other excercise for one week.
