Hi,    I have been researching exercise bikes and I am having trouble finding out which kind is best for weight loss. Does an upright burn more calories than a recumbent? If anybody has any info on this or suggestions for a good exercise bike I would really appreciate it! Thanks!:D

I have heard, and this is NOT gospel, that you burn more calories on a recumbent bike because your legs are parallel to the ground so you have the weight of your lower leg (calf) to lift, in addition to your quads, and where you also do this on an upright bike, it's all in the angles and weight ratios.
Recumbents are more likely to lead to kness pain however, so if you have a weakness in that area, you should stick to uprights.

Better still, buy a bicycle trainer stand..   You just fit your road bike onto it, set the resistance and pedal away!   They're much more comfortable than exercise bikes, because you're sitting on a real bike.

And the bonus is that you can use it outdoors when you're not training.   Even more calories burned.

I had one years ago that used magnetic resistance - much quieter than those turbo-fan thingies.

I bought a recumbent bike last year and I love it!  I decided to go with it because of the arthritis in my hip.  I wanted to exercise but because any weight placed on my leg was too painful after a few minutes of anything, there wasn't much else I could do.  Mine has a computer built into it with preset programs (more resistance, tells you to go faster or slower, etc.).  I was able to get it on sale, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford it at full price.  One other advantage..............it's butt friendly (cuz it's like sitting in a chair)!

P.S.  I had my hip fixed this year, so I am now pain free, and I still like my recumbent bike!

Here's the link to mine!  I bought it on sale for $199.00 at Sears.
